SureFire’s EP3 Sonic Defenders and EP4 Sonic Defenders Plus protect hearing against high-decibel sound, yet do not interfere with the user’s ability to hear routine sounds such as conversation. For competitors, that could be important range commands; more importantly, for tactical operators, the ability to discern lower-decibel sound could be the important difference between life and death while on duty.
Sonic Defenders utilize the patented Hocks Noise Breaker filter, which greatly reduce harmful sounds above 85 decibels. However, safe-level sound is allowed to pass through the system into the ear canal. Both the EP3 and EP4 incorporate stopper plugs, which can be inserted to block out lower-level noise if desired. The EP3 provides a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 16dB; the EPR delivers a NRR of 19dB.
Sonic Defenders feature an ergonomic design that conforms to the shape of the ear, and each is made from a hypoallergenic, medical-grade polymer. The low-profile design enables use with a mask, helmet, hat or phone headphones.
The medium-sized, double-flanged EP3 fits most adults; however, the EP4’s three-flanged system fits most individuals with larger ear canals. A full sizing chart is available on SureFire’s website.
