The Rundown on What You Need to Know to Take Your Shot at 3-Gun's Biggest Prize

By Chad Adams

With the announcement of the $50,000 first place prize, sponsored by Leupold Tactical Optics and NBC Sports, 3-gunners are abuzz about the dual-venue 3GN Championship, presented by Brownells. With the excitement already beginning to build, and questions to what has and hasn’t changed, a rundown of the event itself is in order.

3GN Championship Qualifiers

Qualification into the 2011 3-Gun Nation Championship remains unchanged. Competitors still must have completed a minimum of three matches on the 2011 FNH USA 3-Gun Nation Tour, presented by SureFire. A qualifying score, based on those matches, must put the competitor within the top 64 scores on the 3GN Standings by the end of the FNH USA 3-Gun Championship. The 3GN Top 50, following USPSA Multi-Gun Nationals, is locked and those competitors have earned their slot. At FN, an additional 14 slots will be earned based on series points.

Arbitration for the first nine events must be complete prior to the beginning of Event 10, the FNH USA 3-Gun Championship. Competitors are responsible for tracking their own scores. Arbitration of the FN match scores will take place immediately following that match.

On Nov. 13, at the Peacemaker National Training Center in Glengary, WV, the top 64 competitors will compete in a one-day, four-stage match. The 3-Gun Nation Championship, presented by Brownells, is a Tactical Optics-only match, meaning no Open division equipment is allowed. If a competitor wishes to use equipment that falls into Heavy Metal, Heavy Metal Optics or Tactical Irons, that is permissible. The 3GN Championship falls under the same rules and guidelines as does the host match: the FNH USA 3-Gun Championship. Complete rules and equipment guidelines can be found at http://www.lchico5u.com/FNH3G.html.

At the conclusion of the 3-Gun Nation Championship match, the top 16 competitors will advance to the 3GN Shoot-Off. The winners from the round of 16 will then advance to the 3-Gun Nation Championship Shoot-Off Finale, presented by Brownells, in Las Vegas (http://3gunnation.com/news/50000_to_3gn_championship_winner). Should anyone qualified choose or is unable to compete in the 3GN Championship Finale held in Las Vegas, that slot will go to the next qualified competitor by score.

Big Money

While the $50K first place prize is getting all the headlines, many competitors surely have noticed that approximately $100,000 in cash, plus additional prizes, are up for grabs. Much of this money is based on guaranteed sponsorships of certain prizes. However, an additional pot of money will be taken from competitor entry fees. The fees, set at $250, will establish a pot in which 100% of the money is paid back to the competitors. The pot, set for $12,500, is based on a field of at least 50 competitors. Best of all, with the sponsorships 3GN has acquired, this pool of money doesn’t begin to pay the field until way down at number nine. That means 3GN will pay cash prizes to nearly half the field at the 3GN Championship!

Also, several companies have contributed prizes to the event. All competitors will receive a prize bag, and since there is only one division, 3GN will distribute all prizes, based on value, by order of finish in both the four-stage match and the final Shoot-Off. Below is the payout and prize list at press time (additional prizes could be obtained by November):

Ergo Contingency Awards

Also new this year is the Ergo Contingency Program. Ergo is putting up a total of $4,000 for competitors using an Ergo grip that finish in the top three of the 3GN Championship four-stage match. Shoot-Off performance will have no basis on this contingency award.

Ergo Contingency Program

Place                     Payout

1st                           $2,000

2nd                          $1,200

3rd                           $700

3GN Team Event

The 3GN Championship will also be the venue for the final 3GN Team Event of the season, presented by Brownells. Here, the top lady and junior competitors from the FNH USA 3-Gun Championship will draw teams for one relay run. The prize: $1,000 apiece for the winning three-man team.

3GN Junior & Lady Shoot-Offs

Unprecedented, the 3GN Junior and Lady Shoot-Offs take the top four female and junior 3-gunners, respectively, with $5,000 from Cheaper Than Dirt to each winner. Just like the main event, the fields will be determined based on the 3GN Standings, making these Shoot-Offs the toughest junior and lady prizes ever awarded in 3-gun.

The 3GN Team Event, followed by the 3GN Junior and Lady Shoot-Offs, will kick off immediately following completion of the four-stage 3GN Championship match.
