The Arkansas Section Multi-Gun at the Old Fort Gun Club in Ft Smith, AR., was one of the first major 3-gun matches I ever shot, and has always been a favorite. It is a fun, fast, bay-style match that never disappoints. AR section coordinator Tom Lloyd, match director Debby Pankratz, practical pistol director Bruce Bethell and their crew have a real knack for stage design, and it draws people in for this match from all across the country.
This is also one of the longest running multi-gun section matches in the country, and it continued to run strong this year with 109 entrants and a prize table that grows every year.
This 10 stage USPSA match included several high hit factor stages, employed all three guns, and stressed speed while you were hunting points, leaving very little margin for error.
Prop guns can be a sore spot for a lot of people, and this match is a bit famous (or infamous) for them. This year stage 6 saw four shots from a lever-action rifle, and stage 8 began with four rounds through a single-action revolver. These two stages were manned by local cowboy action competitors and offered an opportunity for lots of shooters (including myself) to get their first exposure to cowboy action with these guns.
Add a couple of long field courses, and a 300-yard standards stage, and it made for a fun and challenging match. I made the switch to Tactical Optics before Nationals, and this match made for a great battle between Stag Arms’ Jesse Tischauser, Ty Gentry and myself for the overall in T.O.
Tischauser, fresh off his first top 5 finish at Multi-Gun Nationals, pulled away from Ty and I on day two to win Tactical Optics with 1418.1834 points. The rest of the top 10 consisted of Ty Gentry (1381.1970) , myself (1359.9132), Mike Sisk (1289.3204), Benny Hill (1276.4521), JK Rowzee (1221.6407), Jamie Foote (1199.4604), Doug Bowdler (1161.8545), and Mike Cyrwus (1145.2349).
Smith and Wesson’s Jerry Miculek won Open handily and took the overall with 1472.71 points. James Darst (1323.5080) finished second, followed by Kelly Raglin (1165.8164), Kay Miculek (1089.7324), and Jack Travers (973.3357).
West Chandler from Team Rudy Project scored a solid win in Limited with 1462.8815 points, followed by Mike Chambers (1361.8585), Trapr Swonson (1231.6435), Ting Sun (1215.3789), and Larry Fletcher (1075.5791).
