Rocky Mountain Underway
The 2011 JP Enterprises Rocky Mountain 3-Gun kicked off today at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM. Nearly 300 competitors are registered for the match, competing across five different equipment divisions: Tactical Optics, Tactical Iron, Open, Heavy Metal and Heavy Metal Optics.
Also on the line is a slot in the 3-Gun Nation Shoot-Off, where Safariland has put up more than $10,000 in cash and prizes. With cash payouts throughout the entire eight-man field, as well as $200 gift certificates for all Shoot-Off competitors, Safariland has made this the most lucrative Shoot-Off thus far this season.
The sixth event on the 2011 3GN Tour, Rocky Mountain serves as a critical points match in the division races as well, with several key matchups taking place that could impact the 3GN Divisional Championships, presented by Hornady.
In Heavy Metal Optics, SureFire’s Barry Dueck is looking to close the window of opportunity on Adam Popplewell. A win by Popplewell this weekend would keep him alive for the division title, along with a $5,000 prize from Hornady. Also in the mix now is Patrick Kelley, who has been dominant in recent years in Heavy Metal. But he has only three matches in which to run down Popplewell and Dueck, making Rocky Mountain a must-win match.
In Tactical Optics, Travis Gibson provides more interest as he attempts to catch division leader Kurt Miller. Kelly Neal is also in the mix here, as well as James Casanova. A division win at Rocky Mountain may well set-up how this race will play out heading into the 3GN Championship.
In Open, Mike Voigt seems to have picked up where he left off after a division win at Ironman. With a win at Rocky Mountain, Voigt has a chance at closing even more ground on division leader Clint Upchurch.
Finally, Noveske’s Rob Romero jumped to Heavy Metal for this match, where he will be attempting to overtake Trapr Swonson and division leader Bryan Ray. If Romero can pick up a win this weekend, he just might be shooting for the money during the FNH USA Championships.
Check back all weekend for daily updates from the Rocky Mountain 3-Gun, including full coverage of the 3-Gun Nation Shoot-Off.
