Young Guns Shine in Mississippi

Posted on 10/14/2010

The old guard had better serve notice: there are some puppies out in the 3-gun world who are building some serious bite. Take last weekend's Mississippi 3-Gun Challenge, where Tactical Optics, Tactical Optics Lady and Junior and Heavy Metal all fell to a trio of the sport's youngest 3-gunners.

In Tactial Optics, it was Team Rockcastle Shooting Center’s Ben Fortin who held off Noveske’s Tod Litt, 840.15 points to 833.64. The win further cements Fortin’s rapid ascent up the ranks of top 3-gun competitors in the country, as the active duty U.S. Army soldier out of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, is only in his second year in the sport.

Equally turning heads, junior Katie Harris (630.17), also in just her second year of 3-gun competition, took top junior and top lady in Tactical Optics with an impressive 13th place finish overall.

KY Multi-Gun match director Gary Welborn (620.59) took top senior in Tactical Optics with a 15th place finish overall. In Tactical Irons, Cameron Thompson (887.34) took top honors, besting a field of only four competitors, while Chris Patty (876.25) won Open’s field of six competitors.

However, Heavy Metal boasted a field of 15 competitors, and it was past 3GN winner Rob Romero (893.99), still relatively young in his 3-gun career, who cruised to the division win. Veteran 3-gunner Trapr Swonson (789.25) took second place.
