Tactical Optics
By Patrick E. Kelley
The Tactical Optics Division, casually referred to as TacScope by many who play the game, also goes by the monikers Scoped Tactical and Limited Scoped. This is the division where the majority of competitors play, and for good reason. The equipment roster reads virtually word-for-word the same as Limited division with the exception being your rifle optic choices. Whereas in Limited you are held to a maximum of 1X for your scope (Iron sight and/or Red Dot), in Tactical Optics you can run any scope you desire. And many desire more power!
Over the course of a season, shooters will face targets on the long side of 400 yards. Some match directors take it a bit further, challenging and perhaps frustrating competitors with engagements to 600 yards. Couple this with tough lighting conditions, wind and weather, having a 4, 6 or even 8x power scope on top of your rifle makes sense!
Again, the equipment is virtually the same as one would use in Limited division. An AR in .223/5.56, a self-loading shotgun in 12 bore and a pistol holding 18 or more rounds in either 9mm or .40. Same goes for no comps, ports or optics on your pistol and shotgun. Just bolt your favorite scope onto your rifle (It would be a good idea to be close to 1X on the low setting) and stoke it up, you are ready to rock. Let me add here, (I will say this at every opportunity) know thy zeros!
This is the division where most shooters start and stay. The equipment is practical in size and weight and as configured are other operations useful. Need a varmint wacker? Got it. Upland gun? Plug the mag tube and you’ll have a fast handling pellet spreader. Pistol for personal protection? Why not. Any of the battery of three could well defend hearth and home. Now that’s practical. Heck, maybe that’s what it ought to be called…Practical Division!
